Welcome to the Historical Society of Old Newbury
Historical societies can act as the front porch of a community. It is where visitors often go first to get to know the background fabric of a place in order to help orient themselves before exploring. This way, what is seen about town can be more fully appreciated.
Locally known as “The Hist”, our Caleb Cushing House Museum offers a unique experience for its guests. Unlike the roped-off or glass-encased exhibitions of some of our larger counterparts in modern facilities, our docents will lead you through a portion of our 22-room Federal period mansion with 11 winding staircases brimming with 200+ year-old treasures as you retrace the same steps as a sea captain / merchant of an earlier time. A docent-led tour of our museum is a safari as opposed to a zoo!
We enjoy serving the public through tours, research, lectures and exhibitions and invite you to visit our museum, garden and grounds.
